Lost In Translation

On Saturday i watched this movie and it was great!  Sofia Coppola does an amazing job capturing the essence of the typical middle life crisis and the ups and downs of first time marriage.  set in the heart of japan, this film follows a has-been movie star stuck in the shuffle of getting his carear back on track and trys to keep up with his family back at home who meets a 25 year old newlywed, questioning her role in the world and whether or not her relationship is worth it.  together, they realize that they can have fun in a world that's far from perfect or understandable.  if you want to watch a feel good movie, rent "something's gotta give"; this movie is painfully truthful and is not for those who can't think for themselves.  plus, the music is awesome.  score on for scarlette johansson's ass!

Mean Girls

i am a sucker for teen-movies.  trust me:  this is NO teen-movie- this is art imatating life.  written by SNL's Tina Fey, based on the book, Queen Bees and Wanna-be's, "Mean Girls" really KNOWS high school life and depicts it as it really is:  life threatning, cruel, fun, unusual, memorable, harsh, and demeaning yet includes the comical twist that's already been there but is overlooked.  in most teen-high school movies, yeah, they have your cliques, which are usually just your jocks, outcasts, and losers (whatever); in reality, there's a whole lot more to it than that and "Girls" really hits this chord beautifully (("you have your dorky asians (the pokemon/yu'gio kids), smart asains (the over achievers), and your cool asians (aka the ghetto asians or the asian mafia, as kids in concord liked to refer to it).))  being eeriely familiar yet highly refreshing, "Girls" gives everyone a look into (or bad-ass reality check!) that world that we refer to as "high school", the 'stepping-stone' for adult life.  decked out in a wonderful cast (lindsey lohan, that chick from "The Hot Chick", lacey chalbert- the voice of Eliza on "the wild thornberrys", tim meadows, and tina fey, herself)- despite popular BELIEF and the controversy that surrounds ONE of the cast mates (cou[LINDSEY LOHAN!]gh!)- these relativley young actors and actresses expell the hype-o-meter and give stellar, four star preformances that will amuse, even shock, most viewers.  more than fiction, "Mean Girls" spills all the truth- and lies- that come with these adolesant years.

Just Checking: Scenes From the Life of An Obsessive-Compulsive, By Emily Corasas

This book, that's based on actual excerpts of this middle aged woman hell-bent on keeping her worries seperate from her everyday life, takes you as Emily tries to survive marriage and friendships while consintrating on who's blood might be contaminated and whether or not she has and incurable disease.  humorous and, at times, sorrowful you always catch yourself rooting for her and sepathizing with her in a very positive.  by the end, you are glad that you have experianced this with and helped her out.  a great read; it sheds light on a rapidly growing but not-very publsized disease and is a good laugh for those who suffer from it, as well as understanding it.
